Unlawful Discrimination


The law protects all employees from discrimination on the following grounds:

  • Gender (including gender reassignment)
  • Race
  • Religious Belief
  • Disability
  • Age
  • Sexual Orientation

You are protected from discrimination for any of the reasons stated above regardless of how long you have worked for your employer. Discrimination includes unfair treatment, harassment and victimisation.

If you believe that you have suffered discrimination by your employer or a fellow employee and believe that the matter cannot be resolved informally, the first thing to do is to start the grievance procedure. You will normally find the grievance procedure in a staff handbook.

The law also protects you from victimisation if you have raised a grievance or presented a claim of discrimination to an employment tribunal.
